Modular Muse was developed by Jiffer Harriman during his PhD work at the ATLAS institute at the University of Colorado. It includes hardware platforms for building robotic instruments and tangible interfaces. The motivation to develop these platforms was twofold. They would enable him to more easily develop new musical instruments and interactive experiences for his own work, while also making design more accessible to other users with little or no technical background.

One platform consists of a MIDI Controlled Motor Driver board designed to build musical robots and the second, ‘Sound Clippys’ is an instrument building platform that makes it easy to build tangible interfaces and a software library for mapping interfaces to sound.

MIDI Controlled Motor Driver boards have been used in many applications such as SolidNoise, Solarophone, beatBox, and Aesthetic Algortihims and Sound Clippys have been used in workshops and middle school music classrooms wear children designed and built their own instruments.

Our Musical Robotic Kit uses the MIDI Controlled Driver boards paired with our solenoid (tappers).
